Here we go..
FIRST DOWN: Rockies fans can stop worrying about the fate of Nolan Arenado for at least three years. The deal Colorado and the All-Star third baseman reached makes him the highest paid player per year at over 35 million dollars. The new contract gives Arenado the long-term comfort he wants at eight years, but also allows him to leave in three years if the Rox aren’t the contender he hopes they’ll be. It also allows Jeff Bridich to move on if Arenado starts to go off in the ditch. It’s the best solution for both sides and let’s hope the Rockies can keep the young talent around Nolan going forward.
SECOND DOWN: Isaiah Thomas thinks the Nuggets can get the number one seed in the West, but I think it’s going to be tough. While Denver has been dominant at home, their barely about .500 on the road. Golden State has been fantastic on the road, so that makes it a tough, but not impossible task for Denver. Mike Malone is doing a great job in massaging his roster to get Thomas on the floor without blowing up their chemistry.
THIRD DOWN: Congrats to former Central Warrior QB Brandon Millholland. Millholland takes over as Central’s football coach for another Warrior with Shawn Marsh heading to Eaglecrest. Millholland guided Cedaredge to a 1A state title and has shown the ability to adapt his offensive scheme to the talent he has. Millholland has wanted to get back to his alum mater and it’s a great choice for the Central program.
FOURTH DOWN: Congrats to the CMU basketball teams for punching their post-season tickets. The Maverick women nailed down the RMAC regular season title and the right to host the RMAC Shoot-out Tournament. It’s also looking good for Taylor Wagner and the Mavs to host the South Central region tournament. First year coach Mike DeGeorge has guided the CMU men back to the post-season for the first time in two years. Bringing in transfers like Tommy Nuno, Jess Spivey and Kenzo Nudo have been great additions to go along with Connor Nichols, Brandon Hoffer and Damon Dubots. The CMU men may not win the RMAC Tournament, but they’ve come along way under DeGeorge and his staff. Also want to congratulate the Montrose girls and Fruita Monument boys basketball teams. The Indians girls have made it all the way to the Great Eight in 4A, with the Fruita Monument boys making another trip to the 5A Sweet 16. Big props to Montrose coach Steve Skiff and Wildcats coach Ryan Hayden on great seasons! Don’t want to leave wrestling out with Grand Junction’s JT Skalecki and Hunter Tobiasson bringing home state titles in 5A. The Tigers have more individual state champions then any school in the state and they’ve added two more to that amazing list.
